With every new year of life, it gets trickier and trickier to find time with my loved ones. They live in different cities, in different countries and our diaries are full to the brim. That’s what gave me the idea for my birthday week.

But what is it anyway?

Birthday week is more than just one day. It’s a whole week of celebrations or at least an extended weekend where I can be with my friends. We enjoy life and each other’s company and forget about the everyday life around us. It doesn’t matter how stressful everyday life is at home, the birthday week becomes a safe space where you can forget all your worries for a while.

How do I make my birthday week perfect?

Preparing for a great birthday week requires some planning. It starts with setting dates early so that everyone knows in good time. Then I plan different activities for the whole week, from excursions to special evening events. If friends are travelling from other cities, this could include sightseeing or visiting bars and clubs. You usually don’t do everything on the programme, especially if you’re in a large group… but it’s always good to have a few ideas and options ready.

Organizing accommodation is also a challenge. Sometimes we rent Airbnb accommodation or book hotel rooms, depending on the size of the group and the activities planned.

Why all the effort?

There is something special about the birthday week that makes time stand still. It’s like a temporary retreat where we can savour the moment and deepen the connection with our loved ones. It allows us to detach ourselves from all the daily obligations and devote ourselves fully to the here and now.

Planning may be hectic at times and not everything that is planned is always realised. Nevertheless, it is the anticipation of these days that makes the effort and organisational work worthwhile. It is the spontaneous moments and unexpected events that make the birthday week so unforgettable.

The variety of activities and the different perspectives that all come together give the celebrations a unique flavour. From cosy evenings in bars to boisterous celebrations, Birthday Week is a time for creating memories and strengthening relationships.

The significance of birthday week lies not only in the celebration of the birthday itself, but also in the celebration of life and the precious connections we have made over time. It is a time of celebration, of looking back and looking forward to what is yet to come.

It reminds me that it’s not just about getting older, but about enjoying life to the fullest and cherishing the precious moments. And maybe that’s the secret: celebrating each birthday as if it were the last allows us to celebrate the present and make the most of every moment. At a time when it’s difficult to spend time together, the idea of birthday week is a way to overcome these hurdles and celebrate the importance of friendship and family. It reminds me that getting older also means cherishing the moments we spend with the people who are special to us.

Here’s a quick overview of how you can plan your next birthday week!
