In an event that has shaken the foundations of international diplomacy, the Mexican embassy in Ecuador was raided by Ecuadorian police and military forces on Friday 5 April 2024.

The raid, which stunned observers and world leaders alike, has led to an escalation of tensions between the two countries and an urgent call for a peaceful resolution of the conflict by the international community.

It is important to note that the inviolability of embassies is a fundamental principle of international law, agreed upon in the 1963 Vienna Convention on Consular Relations.

Embassies are considered sovereign territory of the country they represent, and any intrusion inside them constitutes a flagrant violation of national sovereignty and a serious crime. Such actions undermine confidence in diplomatic relations and can have unpredictable consequences, including the escalation of international conflicts.

Developed countries agree in their support for Mexico.

In Latin America, countries such as Brazil and Argentina have issued similar statements of solidarity, calling for calm and respect for international norms. In addition, the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) has called for an emergency meeting to address the situation and seek a peaceful solution to the conflict.

At the European level, several countries, including Ireland, the UK and Denmark, have expressed their support for Mexico and called for a thorough investigation into the incident at the Mexican embassy in Ecuador.

In addition to governments, several international organisations have expressed their solidarity with Mexico. The United Nations (UN), through its Secretary-General, has condemned the attack and called on all parties involved to work towards a peaceful solution based on dialogue.

What people are saying on social media

The news of the attack on the Mexican embassy in Ecuador has not only attracted the attention of foreign policy media, but has also sparked a great deal of discussion on websites such as reddit, where citizens of these countries, as well as foreigners, are voicing their opinions on the matter.

Some of the opinions that abound are those that find it ironic how Ecuador was able to maintain the security of Julian Asagne, and now does the opposite by breaking into an embassy, when countries like the USA did not dare to do so.
