Top 5 most popular porridges in Ukraine

TSN.ua has identified what grains for cooking porridges Ukrainians prefer nowadays.

Nutritionists worldwide insist that a person needs to eat porridge in the morning to make the day productive and active. In the past, a sufficient amount of meat was not available to the general population. Plant grains became a source of food for humans to survive. The culture of eating cereals has been formed in different nations over the centuries. With the development of the world economy, the consumption of grains unusual to the specific region has spread.

Ukrainians have also discovered a world variety of cereals. Along with the usual porridge, new recipes emerge in everyday life.

However, unusual cereals have still a long way to go into Ukrainian cuisine. A majority still prefers more traditional food. According to the poll concluded by TSN.ua, grains have formed such top 5 popular porridges in Ukraine.

First place voters gave to buckwheat porridge. Without a doubt, buckwheat is a Ukrainian superfood. This cereal grain is so ethnic that it is hardly eaten abroad. In English, the word “kasha” means buckwheat exclusively. During the election, buckwheat even served as a hard currency.

Buckwheat is rich in vitamin B and trace elements, including copper and iron. It contains protein and rutin, which reduces the harmful effects of radiation on the human body. And more, buckwheat is just a magical product for weight loss. No dietary cereal is comparable.

The second place is taken by oatmeal. No wonder such light food is recommended during the disease. It contains many essential amino acids, essential oils, macro-and micronutrients, vitamins. Dishes from this cereal increase immunity, normalize metabolism, reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease. It quickly saturates the body and serves as a kind of brush for the intestines.

The middle of the list is occupied by pearl barley. This luxurious cereal came in third place because it is hard to cook. But healthy eaters should not delete it from their menu. Pearl barley contains a lot of iron, protein, and fibre. It is also a food source of selenium, phosphorus, and potassium.

The fourth most popular grain for porridge is wheat. The dish made of this cereal has a lot of fibre. It perfectly removes metal salts from the body. However, wheat porridge is not recommended for people with gluten allergies and patients with diabetes.

On the fifth place traditionally stays corn porridge. Residents of Western Ukraine cook it the most. Mamalyga, a porridge made out of yellow maize flour, is a historical business card of Hutsul shepherds.

Corn contains vitamins A, B, E, PP. Among the trace elements that make corn porridge an excellent choice for a healthy diet are iron, silicon, potassium, magnesium, and phosphorus. These elements are essential for a successful work of the heart. And this porridge lowers cholesterol and cleanses the intestines.

Unfortunately, the rice porridge did not get into the top 5 favourite grains of Ukrainians. However, he took the honorary sixth place.
