Top 4 reasons Uncle Iroh is the uncle you want

The series The Avatar: the last air beder was released in 2005. Four nations were living peacefully: fire, earth, water and air. The world was a bit too peaceful according to Lord Sozin, the fire lord, as he decided to colonise the nations until they were all under his rule. Uncle Iroh is the brother of the Fire Lord. Throughout the series, the fire nation destroys every village they pass by. Uncle Iroh on the other hand is not like the average Fire Nation man. His character development throughout the series reveals his real personality. Previously leading a failed invasion of the Earth kingdom city, he settles in Ba Sing Se, where he opens a tea shop, and becomes a kind and wise old man. Here are some reasons Iroh is the uncle you want (spoilers ahead):

1. He is caring

Despite his stubborn nephew Zuko’s behaviour, Uncle Iroh always brings him back to reason. When Zuko betrays his uncle and puts him in jail, Iroh is still here for him, giving him the wisest of advice in a time of inner conflict. Iroh throughout the series tries to guide Zuko to a life that will make him happy, instead of one that is expected of him.

2. He has a strong moral compass

Even though he is from the Fire nation, Uncle Iroh works with other nations to stop the Fire lord from colonising the world. He also treats other nations like normal people and holds any anger towards them. He gives advice to strangers he meets on his travels and is always keen to share tea with them. He gives Toph advice about friendship and Aang about power and not giving up the girl he loves to save the world.

3. He is wise

Uncle Iroh is constantly delivering wisdom with an endless plethora of quotables dropped throughout the show. Here are a few of my favourites:

“I was never angry with you. I was sad because I’d thought you’d lost your way.”

“Pride is not the antidote to shame, but its source. True humility is the only antidote to shame.”

Here are some of the best moments in the series where he gives wise advice:

4. He is fun

Even in the saddest moments, he always finds a way to make a joke and be positive about the situation.

Here is what the people think about Uncle Iroh:

The series is overall inspiring, and Uncle Iroh is there to show us what’s right and wrong and provide quality comic relief along the way.
