Our planet is aplenty with fascinating people who do exciting, unique and inspiring things. Sports, humanitarian, political and the list goes on, ad infinitum, all harvest their share of characters who capture the imagination.

Strangely though, it seems most of us are often left with an unanswered question when we encounter someone who engages in the fascinating or operates within the realm of inspiration. Yes, that nagging need to fully comprehend what makes these people unique, just that bit different from the mainstream ordinary Joe Soap.

Why do they do what they do? Yes, that irritating desire to understand exactly why someone is motivated to be so marvellous, so inspiring, just so bloody fantastic.

If you are the type that needs to know the ‘Why’ of it all, well then have I got good news for you. This week has seen the launch of the Why Podcast, a podcast whose sole focus is to uncover why people do what they do.

Hosted by Stephen Sharpe, Episode 1 welcomes Michelle Moore, a 26-year-old Youth Worker from Drogheda, Co Louth. Having gained her degree in Community Youth Work from Dundalk IT, Michelle has been working as a full-time youth worker in the St John Bosco Youth Centre, Drimnagh, Dublin 12, for three years.

The first edition of the Why Podcast delivers on 50min of pure gold, delving into a broad range of interesting topics, including the challenges facing young people, failings of the Irish education system, and the importance of interpersonal support structures, role models, youth workers and other supportive relationships.

Michelle traverses a winding and bumpy journey from a traumatic interaction with the leaving cert to a more fruitful relationship with third-level education. Today she finds her purpose in working and supporting young people from the Dublin suburb of Drimnagh.

Yes, that’s all fine, but why, I hear you ask. Why does Michelle do what she does? What motivates her to want to work with young people, encourage young people, support young people.

Well, listen to the podcast to find out why Michelle does what she does.
