The Rise of Internet Access in Africa

The internet age has affected the way we live our lives and brought so many positive impacts to the world. The internet has changed the way communicate and view the world. Africa has been lagging in this aspect. Due to several reasons from bad government policies, and insecurity Africa has been unable to catch up to the rest of the world.

According to a report by Pew Research center, the use of the internet has been increasing for the last few years. In the Pew Center report Sub – Saharan has a lower level of internet use than any other geographical region, ranging from a high of 59% in South Africa to a low of 25& in Tanzania. In comparison, 89% of Americans said they use in a January 2018 Pew Research Center survey.

In recent years there has been an increase in internet use in sub -Saharan Africa, due to the massive investment in the telecommunication network by firms like Globalcom limited and MTN. There is still a large number of people living in Africa without internet connectivity. African leaders need to do more in improving internet connectivity. We are in a digital revolution and Africa is lagging.

Africa has a young and vibrant population ready to take the world by storm. We can see African creators like Davido, Wizkid, Burna Boy, and Broda Shaggi being known all over the world.

The internet has made it easy for everyone to have access to information despite that social status despite this Africa has the largest number of people without internet access. The lack of internet access in Africa has led to stunted development in Africa. Internet access in available areas is also expensive and this also deters people from using the Internet. African leaders need to do more to help people have greater internet access.
