Starting an hour earlier than usual, the 96th Oscars on Sunday began with a glamorous opening by their host, Jimmy Kimmel, who set the tone for the entire ceremony: humorous, respectful and solemn. Accompanied by the biggest names in the film industry, the show took off from there and made one film the winner of the evening with 7 Oscars: Oppenheimer. But besides that, there were lots of funny and memorable moments that happened on the stage and apart from it.

Here are 5 epic moments from the 2024 Oscars that have already made history.

1. Tearful Award for Best Supporting Act

The Hollywood Reporter

And the Oscar goes to: Da’Vine Joy Randolph! Gleaming in a bright blue dress, the 37 year old actress has won her first Oscar as Best Supporting Act for her role in ‘the Holdovers’. Touched by all the emotions, Randolph began her tearful speech thanking her mother for supporting her through her career. Already broken up in tears, she continued to thank several people in her life, especially women, and created a moment full of emotions and empowerment. “I am so grateful to all the women who have been by my side”, she said. “For so long I always wanted to be different. Now I realize, I just need to be myself. And I thank you for seeing me.” Da’Vine Joy Randolph‘s win makes her the 11th black woman to win an Academy Award for acting.

2. No time to cry for Billie Eilish

Within the award ceremony, Billie Eilish and her brother Finneas won their Oscar as the best song for “What was I made for” from Greta Gerwig’s ‘Barbie’ film, even though the film itself came away with empty hands. The two also performed the song live on stage, with Billie initially accompanied by Finneas on the piano. After creating a very intimate and emotional atmosphere in the whole theatre the orchestra, which had taken place above them, joined in and conjured a memorable moment.

3. More Kenergy

Although ‘Barbie’ was considered as the loser of the evening, Ryan Gosling also impressed the audience in a pink suit with a stunning performance of “I’m just Ken” together with producer Mark Ronson on the guitar and numerous Ken doubles. The highlight of the performance was the surprising appearance of one of the most talented guitarists, Slash, who played a guitar solo.

4. John Cena in the buff

While introducing the nominees for Best Costume Design, host Jimmy Kimmel came up with an incident that happened during the awards 50 years ago, when actor David Niven was surprised by a naked man who ran across the stage. Just like a wake-up call, John Cena suddenly appeared behind a wall and went up to the microphone, clad in nothing but with an awards envelope. Standing on stage to present the Best Costume Design award, the audience was left both amused and astonished by this unexpected display of minimalism.

5. Jimmy Kimmel roasts Donald Trump

“Has there EVER been a WORSE HOST than Jimmy Kimmel at The Oscars?”, asked Donald Trump during the ceremony on the social media platform ‘Truth Social’. A few minutes later, Jimmy Kimmel took up the post and reacted to it. Saying that he got a review, the host read out Trump’s statement, finishing with the words “blah, blah, blah, make America great again”. After making the joke, he asked the audience if they can guess which former President has posted it and continued: “Well, thank you President Trump. Thank you for watching, I’m surprised you’re still – isn’t it past your jail time?”, Kimmel said and earned cheers and laughs from the audience.
