With the COVID-19 pandemic, millions were told to stay at home and give up on their routine life like going to work, to school, to university or even a simple activity as going out. The sudden change in people’s lives came as a shock wave to most of them. In March 2020, no one expected this pandemic to get so far beyond as to be deprived from the simplest activities such as going out for coffee. No one saw it coming. But by time, people adapted to the “new normal” as they adapt to everything else in life. Such applications as Instagram, TikTok and Pinterest became overly famous during these hard times.
One of the most popular activities of the first lockdown were cooking and baking. People cooked, shot videos and posted them online. Even celebrities did that. With less movement and a lot of eating, naturally, people started gaining weight. “Quarantine Weight” suddenly became a thing and a lot of people became self-conscious about this. All the activities done indoors became focused on losing this quarantine weight. People started working out, they started to eat healthier and continue on their daily lives not thinking about the fact that they are locked in.
Although people had to stay indoors in their houses, they could not avoid the social media. Many people started to be affected by the models and influencers’ lives who showed a perfect way of living even during a global pandemic. Famous people came out of the first quarantine as if nothing had happened in the past 3 months and the others came out gaining weight.
Influencers then started advertising forms of working out in order to lose this quarantine weight which allowed people to think that it is something to be ashamed of. This affected the lives of many people regarding their thoughts on their body image and made a lot of people body conscious which is a big problem especially for teenage girls and boys.
