Sun, sand and sea: 5 great staycation destinations

The first quarter of 2021 is already gone, lockdown level 5 is still in place and it seems we will have to stay at home for a while longer until we can get to some sort of normality.

The hope is that by summer, people will be able to enjoy some time off and get a nice holiday somewhere in the country. And Ireland has beautiful spots just waiting your visit.

Here are my top 5 places to your staycation:

1. Spanish Point, Co. Clare

Spanish Point is a village located in County Clare, the name refers to the wrecking of 24 ships of the Spanish Armada in 1588. Spanish Point has some great views where you can enjoy a lovely sunset and this charming village is well known by surfers, because of its big waves.

There are a variety of accommodations, from B&B, hostels and hotels. The beach is just a two hour drive from Galway city and well worth the journey.

2. Tramore, Co. Waterford

Tramore is one of Ireland’s most popular beaches, and for good reason: the coastal views from the Donerail walk are some of the best that you can find in Munster and the Copper Coast drive is equally as beautiful. Whether you decide to go for a long walk or just drive around, you will enjoy beautiful landscapes.

There’s a surf rental for those who want yo try and carve some waves.

Tramore also hosts the Lafcadio Hearn Japanese Gardens. These gorgeous gardens reflect the life and extensive wanderings of Patrick Lafcadio Hearn, who grew up in Ireland, and whose life journey embraced several parts of the world.

To keep the kids entertained, there are a slew of arcades, amusements and many souvenir shops.

Tramore is a great destination with something for everyone and you can get there by car, train or bus.

3. Curracloe beach, Co. Wexford

Curracloe beach boasts one of the longest stretches of accessible coast in the country. The sand is notably soft and it’s the perfect spot to relax and unwind.

Visitors can buy food and even rent surfboards from the only shop near the beach, the “Winning Post”. The collection of large dunes covered in marram grass lead to a picturesque forest that has numerous trails to be hiked.

The Raven’s Point being the culmination of the one such hike leading to a wonderful vantage point of Wexford town.

You can get to Curracloe beach by car, but if you want some adventure, I would recommend you to cycle. It is just 45 minutes from Wexford city.

4. Dogs Bay, Co. Galway

Dogs Bay is a horseshoe shaped bay with more than a mile long stretch of white sandy beach. It backs on to Gurtheen Bay, and together they form a tombolo which juts out into the Atlantic Ocean.

It is a stunning beach with its bright white sand and crystal blue water. The water’s temperature is just perfect, not too icy like the majority of Ireland’s beaches, so you can enjoy a good swim.

Dog’s bay is well protected from currents and is considered safe for swimming and other sports such as windsurfing.

You can get to Dogs Bay by car or alternatively you can take a bus from Galway Bus Station.

5. Howth Cliffs, Co. Dublin

It’s hard to know if this secretive spot has a name, but it can be accessed by veering slightly off one of the Howth hiking trails. It can be a little tough to traverse as the trail leading to this enclave beach is quite steep, but it’s certainly worth it.

It is a small stone beach which is quite private and a great spot to catch the sun. Visitors will often be able to glimpse some friendly seals that bathe nearby. And in a sunny day, even swim with them.

Howth Village is also close by when it’s time for lunch or to peruse some of the stalls in its open market.

The easiest way to get to Howth is by train, where you can enjoy a lovely view of the coast.
