The summer holiday is coming and usually a lot of people decide to take a break and go to somewhere else to relax and have fun. The beach destinations are the most popular in this time of the year.

Spain, Greece or Portugal are quite popular destinations for summer holidays. But this article will present another option that is getting popular every year, Malta.

Malta is an archipelago in the central Mediterranean between Sicily and the North African coast. It consists of three main islands, Malta, Comino and Gozo. Even that the first language is English and Maltese most of the people speak Italian as well.

In terms of history, Malta is a nation known for historic sites related to a succession of rulers including the Romans, Moors, Knights of St. John, French and British. Malta became a Republic in 1974 and joined the European Union in May 2004.

The capital Valletta is a historic town, surrounded by walls. There, can be found a lot of charming restaurants.

According to Renan Duarte (26), a young student who went to Malta with his girlfriend, Valletta is beautiful and a good place to go in the end of the day, he also said, “Valletta is beautiful, we went in the end of the day, to enjoy the sunset. The Fort is really high and the view of the sea up there is amazing. Our hotel was in another village, about 10 minutes away to Valletta by car, however, you can take a gondola and cross the canal towards the fort of Valletta, it is the best way to go, because it is too hard to find a place to park the car in Valletta, and also because the journey is good. However, besides Valletta, we used the car to go everywhere else, the buses in Malta have a good coverage of the country but it is not the same. We did a big research before decide to rent the car, and it was the best decision we took. Because you are free to stop every where you want, including small beaches on the way which are not famous but are amazing, and in terms of money, it is not expensive rent a car over there, so I highly recommend it”.

In terms of balance between an accommodation near restaurants and also a good beach view St Julians’ Beach is highly recommended by tourism websites. There are different styles of accommodation and a big number of restaurants. The food in Malta received the big influence of Italy. Most of the restaurants have pasta, pizza and other Italian food, but the typical dish of Malta is rabbit meat with roasted potato, and it can be found in the majority of the restaurants, not only in St. Julians, but also everywhere around the Island.

So, as every tourist in Malta is looking for beautiful beaches, it’s time to know a little more about them. The most famous beach is the Blue Lagoon, in Comino, situated between Malta and Gozo is the small main island in the archipelago of Malta measuring 3.5 km2. The only way to access the Blue Lagoon is by boat, that departure every 30 minutes from Cirkewwa beach.

The Blue Lagoon, as the name already says has different tones of blue. Water is crystalline, and the variation in shades of blue makes the place becomes heavenly. During the interview Renan said, “ It was amazing, when the boat is approaching the island, you can see that the colour of the sea is different, the water is really clear and it is a kind of shining blue. As soon as you leave the boat and you have a properly view of the beach, it is breathtaking ”.

“We stayed seven days in Malta, and we went to the Blue Lagoon twice, because it was our favourite place in Malta. The best way is to go early because you have more chances to take a good umbrella and chair, they are paid, around 15€ for the couple, but it’s worth. There is just a small part of sand, most of the places are kind of rocks, and it is not comfortable to spend all day”, complement Renan.

Another famous point of  Malta is the Azure Window (blue window) in Dwejra Bay situated in Gozo. It is one of the famous locations used in the TV series Game Of Thrones. This is one of the best diving spots in Malta, but the sea is deep and more agitated in this region, so it’s not recommended for inexperienced people.

To go to Gozo, it is necessary to take the ferryboat in the same place you can take the boats to Comino. It takes around one hour to complete the journey. Once it is there, it is suggested to the tourists to go to the Azure Window, and also to Xlendy Beach, Hondoq Bay and to Ramla l-Hamra beach, known as “Red Beach” where the sand is really red, and the sea is crystalline.

Not only Gozo or Comino have beautiful beaches, Malta has a lot of spots to explore as well, and, the St Peter’s Pool is one of them, located close to Marsaxlokk at the tip of Delimara Point in the southwest of Malta.

The access is not really easy considering that there is a long way without any sign that indicates where to go, and also 15 minutes of walking in a trail. “St Peter’s pool was a surprise for us. It was our first beach in the very first day, we wasn’t expecting something amazing like that. I had to drive in very dry place, where there was no sign of beach or sea, the view was just brown and ‘sand colour’. Once we arrive in the place we supposed to leave the car, we had to walk about 15 minutes, but it didn’t take long to be able to see the sea. It is amazing the contrast between the shining blue of the sea and the brown-beige rock around it. It is a big hole in rock that creates a natural pool. There is nothing there, and this makes the place even more relaxing”, says Renan.

But St Peter’s Pool is not only place to go in Malta, the website also mentioned as typical spot for tourists, the Paradise Beach, Mellieha Beach, Golden Bay and the Anchor Bay where it is situated the Popeye village. The place was created to be the set of Popeye Village film, but now is a theme park and a tourist attraction. “The Popeye Village is definitely a excellent place to spend the day, we had to pay 15€ each but you can enjoy all the park, they have activities in the water, golf, swimming pool, trampolines, boat tour, it is a also a great place for families with kids”, summarizes Renan.
