It’s a very cliché idea for students to come up with group travel in their semester break, since time immemorial or are you the one who wants to have a solo backpack getaway? Both are staple college experiences, but in 2026, the vibes couldn’t be more different.
Before you pay your advance to the group Airbnb and end up in a difficult situation, here are a few pros and cons which will help which paths fit your goals and might help you save your friendship rather than ruining it on a trip.
The Group Trip
Pros : The numbers are high; so is the security, shared bills of groceries and Ubers – reducing the financial burden, and finally, you will have lots of people to take your pictures, basically a personal photography team.
Cons : Decision fatigue-there will always be someone who wants to sleep, there will be somebody who is always hungry, there will be someone who will be unhappy with the chosen location, and there will always be some people who won’t even pay you back.
If you had chosen a group trip, it’s always important to have apps like Splitwise to track who owes whom, which can actually ruin friendships.

Solo Travel:
Travelling alone is the most practical way to grow, but you will be the only one responsible for every single thing. You will be booking the Uber, you will be navigating through the maps, and you will have to balance every single thing by yourself, but this will provide a level of self-confidence which classroom cannot replicate
Pros : absolute freedom, you can do whatever you want, whenever you want, without anybody’s permission or approval.
Cons : the solo tax – there will be no one to split the rooms or the Uber bills, and in most of the places when you go for dining, you’ll have to sit alone and have your food.
If you’re worried about your safety while travelling alone, many students are opting for solo travel communities that offer social hostels where you don’t feel lonely.

@gracee_jn Three reasons why choosing a group tour with @Ultimate Travel for your east coast Australia trip could actually save you money, time and stress. Save this for your next trip! 1. Saving money – Just how much is included in the trip itself! So many additional activities are included.. like surf lessons, yoga, boat trips etc.. and an extra bonus is your food is almost always included. AND if you literally type in 300GRACE into your booking you instantly save $300. Need I say anymore. 2. Time – I thought being the main organiser at home would mean that not planning my trip would be stressful. It was the opposite, rather than stressing about what to do.. I just got to be present and enjoy every part of it. 3. Stress! And this is a big one, because travels don’t always go to plan.. sometimes it’s even out of your control. But any travel worries were totally taken care of by our amazing group leader. How will I ever go back to travelling without my group leader you ask.. I actually don’t know 🙃 #traveltips #moneysavingtips #solotravel #eastcoast #girlswhotravel

If your goal for summer is fun impulsiveness and laughter, take the group trip, and if your goal is to reinvent yourself and to come out of your comfort zone, then go solo.
Whichever your choice might be, the ultimate goal is to travel. Research shows that travel increases employability by developing cross-cultural communication skills. Whether you’re with your best friends or you’re alone, the world is waiting for you. Whatever your choice is, you are going to cherish the memories that you’ve created by travelling in your 20’s, that’s for sure.
