With busy and stressful work, studies, responsibilities, and personal commitments, life can become hectic. People think that when they want to change their life, they need to make drastic changes, but some habits can make a huge difference with the smallest changes. People believe that they should make big changes to improve their lives, but sometimes the smallest habits are enough to make the biggest change. Certain behaviours, which we do over and over each day, can gradually impact our happiness, our mindset, our productivity and our health.

I have become more mindful of the importance of smaller habits and changes as I always seek to become more productive and more balanced. Positive activities – if you need 15 minutes each day, that’s a good amount of time that can create long-term changes. The habits aren’t expensive in any way nor a huge time commitment, but they require consistency and commitment.

Here are some simple daily habits which will help you improve your daily routine.

1. Start Your Day Without Your Phone

Some people would check their phone first thing in the morning. Communication through technology can be a great means of keeping us connected, but it’s important to go to work every day without noise and disruption from technology and social media (Weyland et al., 2020).

Rather, consider taking some of the initial few minutes of the day to take a peaceful few moments. Take water breaks to stretch, rehydrate, stretch out to make your bed, or simply think about what you would like to accomplish for the day. Having a quiet morning routine can help you feel more focused and prepared (Mergelsberg et al., 2021).

It can help to set a positive tone for your morning and contribute to your mental clarity and well-being.

2. Drink More Water

It is among the simplest methods to look after your health and remain hydrated. People don’t remember to drink a sufficient amount of water during hot days, particularly when they are studying or working for prolonged periods.

Having a water bottle close at hand will make it easy to drink water often. When you are well hydrated, you will feel better, be more concentrated and energetic.

It’s a small routine, but it can have a positive impact on the way you feel during the day.

3. Take Time to Learn a NEW THING

Learning doesn’t have to take place in classrooms. It’s never too late to brush up on a new skill every day, so you can make a personal and professional difference.

Read a few pages of a book, learn a new language, watch educational videos or learn new skills. It can be beneficial to learn for 15 minutes a day, which adds up to more knowledge over time.

A positive learning attitude opens up new opportunities and increases confidence through small learning steps.

4. Make the area in the workspace clean and organised.

Your environment, whether good or bad, can influence your ideas and work. When the clutter in your room or workspace at work becomes an issue, it can ruin your ability and comfort to focus.

A little tidying will help to make your home a more comfortable place. Small tasks, such as getting your desk organised, tidying your room or clearing up after toys and games, can help make the day easier (Stawarz et al., 2020).

5. Practice Gratitude

Easily, in everyday life, we become complacent and think only about the problems and the challenges. Practising gratitude will help us to notice and value positivity in our lives!

You may simply jot down three blessings that you’re grateful for daily. Simple actions such as having a good meal, spending time with friends, or accomplishing a small goal.

This habit will help you to have a positive outlook on life and how you perceive things going well.

6. Take Short Breaks

In an attempt to be productive, many people work without rest (without taking a break) for several hours. But short breaks can have an enhancing impact on concentration and efficiency (van der Weiden et al., 2020).

Sometimes, just a few minutes of walking, doing some stretches or letting your mind unwind can help you get back to your work with a surge of energy.

Sleep is also an important element of productivity.

8. Promote Physical Activity

As technology plays a pivotal role in our lives, there is a risk that it will negatively impact our attention spans and mental health due to spending hours online.

You can make small changes, like limiting screen time or getting away from social media before bed, which can help you to use your time better.

Creating a better life doesn’t need to mean making a lot of changes. Lots of little things can make a significant difference in the long-term. The important thing is to be really mild and, little by little, create a routine that fits you. What is a habit you’ve acquired that has helped make your life better?
