Met Gala 2024: sleeping beauties and fashion reawakenings

The annual Met Gala took place in New York on Monday, May 6th. This year’s theme was “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion” – the Met exhibition will feature 15 garments that can no longer be displayed on mannequins due to their fragility and over 200 other pieces reflecting themes of nature.

Like every year, the gala itself turned into a list of best and worst-dressed celebrities. Many attendees wore designs by John Galliano, and many others wore LOEWE, designed by Jonathan Anderson. LOEWE is one of the supporters of this year’s Met exhibition, so there is no surprise that the brand was one of the key name’s on this year’s carpet.

What is maybe more interesting, is the absence of many other big brand names – Gucci, Bottega Veneta and Louis Vuitton did not dress attendees. Since majority of the final looks have to be approved by Anna Wintour herself, the annual Met Gala can be a good indicator of which designers and brands are Anna and Vogue’s current favourites. A lot of celebrities who were rumoured to attend were also missing; Rihanna, Blake Lively and Bella Hadid being among those who missed out.

Given the theme of the event was reawakening archival fashion pieces through new technology, there was a surprising lack of archival looks worn at the gala. Majority of the looks were new creations, some more and some less on theme. One major archive pull for the evening was Kendall Jenner’s look, designed by Alexander McQueen for Givenchy. Many hailed Kendall as one of the best dressed of the night.

Another attendee who caused a stir was Kim Kardashian, who wore a silver John Galliano dress, with a grey cardigan complimenting the look. The attention was on Kim’s waist, which looked smaller than ever with the help of a corset. While many expected that Kim would be taking it easy this year, after last year’s fiasco when she wore a Marilyn Monroe dress, most seem to forget that Kim follows her own theme for the event, which is knowing that if she wears something divisive it will be discussed and picked apart. There is rarely a year where her look at the Met is not one of the most talked-about looks of the night.

Another notable look of the night was Lana Del Rey wearing custom-made Alexander McQueen by Irish designer Seán McGirr, which was based on an iconic look from the house’s 2006 fall collection.
