This is all over TikTok and Instagram: a picturesque terrace somewhere in Mouraria, a perfectly poured rosé, and you grinding away on your laptop to somehow pass your midterm semester. The reality is that any student traveller will tell you that the line between workation and the academic meltdown in a foreign country is wafer-thin.

If you are still planning to head to Portugal this summer, ditching your university library, then here are some reality checks and strategies you can use to balance your life and academics in your workation.

Lisboa is a digital heaven, but not every cute, tiled cafe wants you sitting there sipping a cup of latte for four hours. For actual work to happen, you should skip the touristy ones and head to Choupana Caffé or Dear Breakfast Bica, which are known for being laptop work-friendly. If your exams or work require a stable Wi-Fi, then let’s just not rely entirely on the café Wi-Fi. You can also look for options for call working spaces.

In 2026, Portugal actually tightened their immigration rules. You can easily go around the city with a tourist visa, but if you’re planning to have a nomad semester, you should be very aware of the Digital nomad Visa requirements. Most of the students stay there for a year, opting for the temporary stay visa, which is a perfect option for people who would love to travel and study at the same time. Most of the working digital nomads are also opting for the temporary stay Visa.

To ace in academics and also at the same time to enjoy your life, you need to have a discipline versus distraction strategy. The biggest threat to your academics in a country like Portugal, where everything feels inviting, is going to be your focus; you’ll have to make yourself prepared to deal with the invitation to surf at the beach at 2 pm or to attend a lecture. To pass our classes, you have to have a time block strategy

The 7/11 Rule, this strategy is basically starting to work from 7 to 11 when the city is quiet, and you can roam around without guilt in the afternoon and evening. This is a very practical and doable strategy.

Portugal has amazing libraries; you can use them if you want total silence and to get into the academic mood. Biblioteca Camões is one of the best places to teleport you into the academic mood.

Definitely, travel can teach you practically everything that you have learned in the textbooks, giving you the main character growth arc.
