Over the years the small town of Mullingar, tucked into the heart of Westmeath has produced some of this nations finest musicians. From the innovative styles of Joe Dolan to the One Direction superstar Niall Horan, Mullingar knows how to sing.
In recent years This Town has given up a new musical gem to add to its collection. Darren Flynn, known as Flynn, has exploded onto the scene and Oh me, oh my he is quickly soring into international fam.
Having appeared in the RTE 2FM’s 2019 Rising and now honing his craft in the UK, Flynn continues to make ripples in the music scene. Taking time out from his hectic schedule I was lucky enough to catch up with the Mullingar man and chat about his career so far.
Who inspires you to make music?
Old artists that have come and gone like Bill Withers and Amy Winehouse still inspire me to this day, my family, my home, I’m inspired by anything and anyone who urges me to make an effort to better myself I guess.
Has music always been a part of your life?
Pretty much, I’ve always used music as an outlet and deep down I always wanted to do this as a job (It just took me a while to admit it).
You’ve had such an exciting career so far, What has been the highlight of it all?
Probably performing at Tomorrowland with Lost Frequencies, difficult to top that one!
If you could collaborate with any artist who would it be?
Ever since I started making music I always thought it would be cool to collaborate with the Rudimental guys, they had a big influence on me growing up.
Can you describe the feeling of being on stage performing?
It’s a difficult one to put into words because it’s such a surreal experience every time, I never really know what I’m feeling, I mean 40 minutes on stage literally feels like 40 seconds in my head! Euphoric comes to mind though, it’s a special moment for sure.
Being from Mullingar, what impact do you feel growing up here had on your career and how important is home to you?
Mullingar is a big music town, everyone is really encouraging and there is talent everywhere. I had a lot of opportunities to perform and develop as a musician when I was starting out, so yeah, I would say growing up there definitely had a positive impact on my career. Home means everything to me, a lot of my songs are inspired by where I’m from and the people around me.
What can we expect in the future from Flynn?
Lots of new music and hopefully some live shows, if the world allows it!
So there you have it. Flynn has been climbing the ladder of musical success and it seems like the sky is the limit!
Being from Mullingar myself, there is a great sense of pride in seeing one of our own achieve their dreams. I had the great pleasure of seeing Flynn perform in Mullingar in 2019 (remember concerts? They were fun…). His stage presence and talent were incredible. Only time will tell now how far this star rises!
