Griffith College men’s basketball team has started the season undefeated, winning their first two games. So far the team has beaten DBS and IT Sligo, leaving the team in first place in Division 1 heading into the new year. This is the first year of a partnership between Super League club Templeogue BC and Griffith College, where players come to Griffith on athletic scholarships and represent both the club and the college. The Griffith College basketball programme has been very successful, advancing to at least the semi-finals of the regular season as well as the inter-varsities, the annual end of the year tournament, for the last number of years
Last season ended in disappointment, losing to NUI Galway in the semi-final in both competitions, in a fitting end to a difficult season, where Swords Thunder, the Super League club Griffith College was then in a partnership with, folded halfway through the season.
According to Oisín Kerlin, who studies accounting at the college when he is not playing basketball, “the team feels a lot more like a team this year, and everyone is willing to work for each other, which is a nice change from the past seasons”.
Coach Jason Killeen agrees, and says that “the team is made up of a diverse group of international students from all over the world, and the players and staff are really learning from each other”. These international students include Swedish, French and American students, some here on scholarship, some here as exchange students.
The team last won a title in 2017, but the good start to this season has coaches and players dreaming of bringing back another trophy to Griffith College.
