According to the World Health Organization, Coronaviruses (CoV) are a large family of viruses that cause illness ranging from the common cold to more severe diseases such as Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS-CoV) and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS-CoV)

Coronaviruses can be transmitted between animals and people. Common signs of infection include respiratory symptoms, fever, cough, and breathing difficulties. In more severe cases, the infection can cause severe acute respiratory syndrome, pnuemonia, kidney failure and death.

The current outbreak of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) was first reported from Wuhan, China, on 31 December 2019.

On 30 January 2020 the outbreak was declared an international Public Health Emergency and has continued to grow affecting 88 countries and territories to date.
