It’s never just a goodbye that ends a friendship.
True Friends can never be apart, maybe in distance but never in heart – Helen Keller.
There is a time in every individual’s life when they are relocated to a different town, city, or even a whole different country. Everybody focuses on the importance of long-distance love, yet long-distance friendships get less attention. However, both are equally worthy, conveys full emotions, and share the same complexities.
Sometimes friendships fade slowly with no noise, just leaving behind many unanswered calls, missed texts, and important discussions that never actually took place. It is never the fight, rather some moments when you realise that the spark is missing, and something weird is going on, which remains unspoken.
While there are some rules in relationships, whereas in friendships there are no rules, it is not shaped by expectations for how many calls one should have to keep the bond intact, or what efforts you have to put in to make it ‘’enough’’, and which is why the friendship gets affected by distance in different ways.
The little habits of calling, texting and impromptu plans that held the friendship together have somehow faded and been replaced by the feeling of uncertainty.
The most difficult task of long- distance friendship is not the distance itself, but the silence that comes along with it.
It’s been concerning not having any idea of somebody’s whereabouts, about whom you used to have a full update at some point in life; there’s something sad about not being able to become an important part of your loved one’s life anymore.
However, sometimes distances serve a big purpose as it evolves friendship in a different way.
Rather than constant interaction, there are smaller but more thoughtful exchange of emotions. Rather than knowing every detail about someone’s day, there is a better appreciation of who the opposite person is growing into. In many situations, long distance doesn’t undermine friendship; rather, it reduces it to the things that are truly important.
Experiences are becoming rarer but more valuable. A single discussion might have the impact of weeks or even months. At a similar time, friendships don’t just depend on internal reflection, it can also be found in everyday situations, such as unplanned discussions, shared humour and simple interactions that do not require explanation but just facial expressions. Although people live miles apart, these experiences continue to go on, often via video calls, sharing of relatable reels and sometimes even late night chats.
There’s a saying that goes, distance does not always disconnect individuals; but, it showcases the depth of the bond between genuine people, who are worth flying across oceans for. Moreover, it’s the way of expression that gets changed, not the bond itself.
This particular life transition becomes more genuine as people try to progress through life. As they start juggling job, study, family, and commitments altogether. Whatever once seemed simple now demands commitment and attention. Still, the bonds of friendship that last are frequently those that transform – not by wanting more, but by demanding less with less pressure, less explanation and more understanding.
This is when long-distance friendships start standing strong and prove their worth – it’s not always about being in touch every day, but having an understanding that your bond will still remain strong no matter how much time it takes for people to come together.
In many instances, distance serves as a challenge, not about how frequently they talk, but whether it still feels the same when they actually talk. Maybe that’s what makes long-distance friendships last.
