Chick Flick: The Most Powerful Movie Genre

Ian McBurnie

Chick flick is a slang term for a film genre mainly dealing with love and romance and designed is appeal to largely female target audience. So it is perhaps unsurprising that it is what drives the movie industry – whether its dealing with issues that every girl can relate to or the latest ‘hot’ celebrity cast in these movies that drives us girls to cinemas and DVD stores in droves. Stereotyping or not, these movies hold an multi-million dollar sector of the movie industry and, to be fair, they are fantastic!

Although many types of films may be directed toward the female gender, ‘chick flick typically used only in reference to films that are heavy with emotion or contain themes that are relationship based (although not necessarily romantic as many other themes maybe present.)

During the 1980s in America, a succession of teenage drama movies that were also labeled as chick flicks, with many having John Hughes at the helm. These chick flicks had a different and more realistic tone than previous ones. Several chick flicks have been patterned after the story of Cinderella or other fairytales (e.g. A Cinderalla Story and Pretty Woman) or even Shakespeare in the case of She’s The Man and 10 Things I Hate About You; and many are adapted from successful and popular novels such as The Princess Diaries or The Devil Wears Prada, and literary classics like Little Women.

After the blockbuster success of the 2008 drama/romance film Twilight, adapted from the notorious novel of the same name, several critics remarked that “the word chick-flick is going to have to be replaced by big box-office girl-power flick” and that “the box-office clout of the female audience is just astounding, and it’s been an undeserved audience for way too long”.
Us girls have no problem finding money for things we’re passionate about. Many of my favorite movies of all time are listed below in the Top 30 but there are many others that could be added to that list. There are very few great movies aimed at women that men don’t secretly love as a guilty pleasure of their own. Majority of these movies have become cult classics and I know from experience amongst me and my friends that we quote a lot of these movies on a daily basis.
