After 24 rounds, the Portuguese football championship was interrupted, as well as in the vast majority of championships around the world, due to the spread of Covid-19. With ten games to go, FC Porto is the current leader with 60 points, just one more point than the current national champion, Benfica. Closing the podium is the other Lisbon emblem Sporting, with 46 points, and already without great possibilities to win the title.
The blue and whites took the lead of the table on the 23rd round, when the eagles slipped against Moreirense (1-1) and allowed the rival to take the lead in the race for the championship title. The formation led by Bruno Lage has been losing collective capacities and quality of play since the defeat at Estadio do Dragao (highlights of this game on next video), house of FC Porto, and has been having difficulties to return to the quality shown in the previous season, which ended with the conquest of the first place.
The formation of Sergio Conceicao, on the other hand, was able to wait for a slip by the rival, who was slow to appear but soon emerged after the psychological shock that is losing against the direct opponent. FC Porto spent much of the season behind Benfica, but it may have been in the final decisions that the northern team overtook the current champion.
What is also yet to be decided is what will happen with the 2019/20 season. The Coronavirus completely ruined sports plans in practically all European championships, and there are already several solutions found to determine the champions. In Portugal, still without a final decision, there are the possibility to finish the Championship with the current classification, which would make FC Porto the new champion, or the possibility of playing the rest of the games without fans in the stadiums. The decision will be taken shortly (until May 1).
The question is? If they decide to play the matches, who will be the champion? This is what people are thinking, analysing based on answers I’m getting from twitter:
