Trading city streets for open country on horseback

Have you ever wanted to experience a side of Ireland that the average visitor never gets the opportunity to see? Deep in the Wicklow countryside, Ray Fisher runs Hollywood Horse and Pony Trekking, offering a quieter way to explore the landscape on horseback, far from the pace of the city.

Whether you’re experienced with horses or simply curious, this is an experience not to miss. More than just a guided ride, it offers the chance to move through the countryside at your own pace, whether slow and relaxed or faster and more exhilarating, and see a side of Ireland that feels authentic and off the usual path.

When my two best friends came to visit, we didn’t have to think twice about adding something horse-related to our plans. I met the both of them through horses, so venturing out on a ride in the open country just made sense. The girls wanted to see more than just the city, and I wasn’t about to pass up the chance to ride in such a beautiful setting. We were lucky enough to get a perfect sunny day, which is far from typical in Ireland in March.

Not only are you matched with the horse that best suits your ability, your experience is tailored to what you want most out of the ride. The girls and I were lucky enough to be led by Ray himself, which gave us the chance to learn more about his program and the horses he keeps on the property. We even lucky enough to be joined by Lisa, a regular rider at Hollywood Horse and Pony Trekking, who captured plenty of photos and videos along the way.

We started the ride walking along the top of a hill, with rolling green stretching out for miles in every direction. From there, we picked up into a trot, moving through narrow paths that cut through the landscape and let us settle into the rhythm of the horses.

Once everyone was comfortable, Ray gave us the freedom to canter whenever the ground opened up. There’s nothing quite like galloping across an open field with your best friends, surrounded by that kind of scenery.

When the ride came to a close, everyone had a smile on their face, talking about how great it had been.

If you find yourself in Ireland and want to see more than the usual stops, it’s worth making the trip out here. It’s not just about the ride, but the way it lets you experience the landscape, moving through it rather than just looking at it.

Whether you’ve grown up around horses or you’re trying it for the first time, it’s something that feels natural, unforced, and genuinely memorable. Days like this don’t come around often, and it’s the kind of experience that stays with you long after you’ve left.
