A quick list of easy-going TV shows for when you have no idea what to watch.
You know those days when you’ve had enough and you need to switch off your brain. The days where you’ve pulled your last bit of strength together to make dinner with whatever is left in the fridge. The days where you sit down on the couch and realise that you have no idea what to watch.
Your food is getting cold, you’re starving and you’re beginning to get agitated.
So, here’s a list of 8 TV shows to save yourself the mental stress on days like those:
1. The Good Place (2016 – 2020)
Eleanor Shellstrop (Kristen Bell) has died. She has woken up in heaven. But, there’s a slight problem…she’s not meant to be there. Eleanor finds herself in the afterlife and tries to navigate how to become a better person after living as a ‘not very good’ person on Earth.
This unconventional premise for a comedy show allows for a fun, heartfelt and though-provoking journey into the consequences that our real lives have on our after lives.
Where to watch: Netflix
2. Ted Lasso (2020 – present)
An American college football coach takes a job as an English football coach, knowing nothing about the sport.
Ted Lasso is not just for football lovers. It’s for anyone who enjoys stories about friendships, rivalries and finding out where you belong.
Where to watch: Apple TV
3. Santa Clarita Diet (2017 – 2019)
WARNING: This show was unfortunately cancelled after season 3, but that doesn’t stop it from being a thoroughly fun watch.
If you would like to watch an absurd and quirky show about a zombie trying to juggle work and life (or death in this case) in a suburban neighbourhood, then this show is for you. If you would like to watch a show where Drew Barrymore plays that zombie and Timothy Olyphant plays her husband, then this is definitely the show for you.
Where to watch: Netflix
4. Friday Night Dinner (2011 – 2020)
A British comedy show that follows a family and their antics as they have their weekly Friday night dinner.
A strange dad, brotherly pranks, and an odd neighbour who always seems to appear out of thin air is a combination worth watching.
Short seasons. Short episodes. The easiest show to “switch your brain off” to.
Where to watch: Netflix
5. Abbott Elementary (2021 – present)
If you like The Office but want a fresh, mockumentary style comedy about overworked teachers in an underfunded school in Philadelphia, then this is your next watch.
Zero commitment. Just sit back and enjoy the delightful dynamic between a wide cast of loveable characters.
Where to watch: Disney+
6. Shrinking (2023 – present)
Jimmy (Jason Segel) is not your average therapist as one day he starts to tell his patients exactly what he thinks. Is this ethical? Not at all. Is it entertaining? Very much so.
Bonus: Harrison Ford plays a grumpy old therapist who you can’t help but love.
Where to watch: Apple TV+
7. Clarkson’s Farm (2021 – present)
“Is Jeremy Clarkson not the man from that car show?” Yes he is.
“Then why is he making a show about farming?” I think he asks himself that on a daily basis.
Jeremy Clarkson shows us a different side to him as we follow his attempt at farming with the help of many, many other people.
You’ll laugh. You’ll cry. You’ll cringe at your TV every time Jeremy does something stupid (which happens a lot). Watching him try to navigate a world that he has zero skills or knowledge in is a treat.
Where to watch: Prime Video
8. Taskmaster (2015 – present)
A British game show that has comedians competing in absolutely bonkers tasks each week.
It’s funny, unpredictable and a real mood booster.
Any season. Any episode. Jump right in and let the hilarious chaos unfold.
