One by one he gets all his family members some kind of job around the house, but they don’t know that the life they built on lies is soon to be shattered. 2. Gone Girl
The work of David Fincher is wide-ranging and diverse, but no questions asked, one of his most influential movies is Gone Girl, based on the novel of Gillian Flynn. The production got mostly favourable reviews, while received 188 nominations and 64 awards.
On the day of their wedding anniversary, Nick Dunne comes home to the disappearance of his wife, Amy. The news spreads quickly and the media got hold of the story immediately, since Amy’s parents modelled the protagonist of their children’s book series after their daughter. The detective arrives and the investigations starts. As more evidence is collected and the police digs deeper, the story becomes more and more difficult to understand, the clues are impossible to piece together. Nick becomes the main suspect, which the media gladly accepts as it fits the “the husband is usually the killer” narrative. But what happened to Amy?
Ben Affleck plays the worried husband very well, but the focus is not on him. The portrayal of Amy, delivered by Rosamund Pike was highly praised by the critiques, because of its bluntly accurate implementation of a female psychopath.
3. Shutter Island
Martin Scorsese’s 2010 adaptation of Dennis Lehane’s novel has become an icon among thrillers. This movie is a bit different than the rest, the plot twist doesn’t come in the end. Not entirely. The complex unfolding of the storyline makes the movie so unique, it glues your eyes to the screen and stays in your mind for a long time.
1954, United States. A detective and his partner arrive at a mental institution, Ashecliffe Hospital, located on Shutter Island. They were sent there to investigate the disappearance of a female patient, who vanished into thin air from her locked hospital room. As the storyline unfolds, we learn that nothing is what it seems.
The cast is remarkable: Leonardo DiCaprio takes on the lead role, accompanied by Mark Ruffalo as his partner. Most critiques say DiCaprio could have won the long-awaited Academy Award for his performance.
