“Giving up smoking is the easiest thing in the world. I know because I have done it thousands of times.”
I came to Ireland and met many people, some of them became my ‘just friends,’ and some very good friends. All my friends own good habits except for one. That friend of mine has many dreadful habits in him but the worst part is that he smokes like it’s his last day on planet earth. I asked him why you smoke so much, he smiled and said, “I don’t know.” That was very strange for me because mostly you do not do stuff that you do not know about. I told him that a cigarette is the only consumer product which when used as directed kills its consumer. It sounds funny but that is the truth.
I asked him about him about the reaction of his family towards his smoking habit and he said, “my mom once asked me to swear on her head and to promise that I will never smoke again, I did what she asked and after 30 minutes I was smoking again.” I was speechless!
My smoker friend thinks that smoking makes him feel relax and opens his mind and he becomes extra intelligent while studying, which is not true at all as he has not done anything remarkable in his whole life including studies. I am sure of that.
The smoker friend smokes around 30 or more cigarettes a day. One pack is for 12.20 euro, when I calculated the amount for the whole month, if he is smoking 3 packs in two days, the amount was somewhere between 530 to 550 euros per month. My apartment rent in Dublin is lesser than this.
I tried to make him realise that smoking is bad for health and he said, “Smoke or not, you die anyway. He also said, “I was reading somewhere that it’s been proven that 100% of people that smoke dies …it’s also been proven that 100% of people that don’t smoke die too.” WOW, what about the quality of life? me thinking!
After failing to make him realise how bad smoking is, I asked him if he has ever heard of lung cancer, but there you go, he said, “I know I am inviting lung cancer to come and greet me, but I still don’t know much about lung cancer so to know more about lung cancer…keep SMOKING !”
Finally, he decided to quit smoking last week and he went to a vape shop to buy a vaporiser. He spent 80 euros on vape kit and flavours and the next thing he did after buying the vape, was to buy a pack of cigarettes again. He is still in shock for wasting his 80 euros on a stupid thing, according to him.
For him, smoking is a time pass and a hobby, I am sorry, wait, what! ohh so killing your self is a hobby, I did not know that. Thank you very much for putting that into my knowledge. I asked him not to smoke in front of me and he said, “do you want to try this cigarette, it’s really good,” I am speechless, AGAIN!
He asked me if I can help him to quit, which I tried by counselling him, after some counselling on how and why to quit smoking, he thanked me for helping him out and then he sat down in a relaxed manner, took a cigarette out from his pocket and started smoking again. WOW! that was some good counselling.
If I bang my head against the wall, I am sure nothing will happen to that wall, but I might bust my head open. So, after failing to refrain him from smoking, I decided to write this down so that if he will ever read this, maybe he will think about quitting. Life is blessing and colourful. If you want to enjoy your life, then try not to smoke again and you will live a healthy life and you will see positive changes in your life.
Note: No offence to any other smoker in the world.
