The Carnival in Rio de Janeiro has started. Over a million people gathered and danced in the streets Saturday night.

Demonstrations against corruption and consumption of costs concerning the upcoming football World Cup and the Summer Olympics in 2016, have embossed Brazil’s largest city for quite some time now. But, this weekend slogans and banners were replaced with glitter, feathers, magnificent costumes and intense samba rhythms.

Competing against each other

The samba schools competing against each other have been preparing for the carnival for months, which costs millions of dollars. The participating samba schools are evaluated based on choreography, music, dancing and creativity. The winner will receive a status that is considered to be as triumphant as winning a football championship.
