Thatcher style

Although Margaret Thatcher was one of the most controversial political figures to ever serve as prime minister in the UK through the 70’s and 80’s I still think it necessary to pay attention to her undeniable level of sophistication in her style. Her elegant “power dressing suits” were the envy of women across seas. From the jewelry she dawned, the glistening pearls came in several variations while the brooch sat perfectly on her jacket collar. Her pussy bow blouses were a trade mark look that became defining of her style as well as iconic. Undoubltly her work attire and essentially her uniform was impeccable  consistently down to a tee. Those who helped her dress made sure of that. As a woman that would be watched on television and in the media frequently she had to remain as polished as a diamond.

She single handily dominated the male world of politics. A fierce and temperamental figure who was both liked and hated across the United Kingdom. Even now following her death her style has left an impact on the fashion industry but more importantly a legacy. Her fashion sense is so memorable because with clothes she enjoyed the power in them. As the iron lady she defined and created a unique style. “I wear my Sunday best seven days a week”.

Although her style may not have impressed everyone some of her memorable items included a black Asprey bag that raised £25,000 pounds in a charity bid a few months ago. Her suits sold for 10 times the estimated auction price back in September. 7 suits worn by her in the 70’s went for £73,125 at the auction. No one anticipated the high figures they said 1,000 to 1,500 per suit proving exactly how valuable the suits by Mansfield, Dellbury and Susan Small are.

Her arrival at number 10 after centuries of male domination marked a refreshing take on style. Her garden-party hats and favorite colored blue and navy suits wer what she described as “my party’s color”.

Meryl Streep played Thatcher in the movie iron lady released in 2011. The dressing for the part had to embody exactly her style and they managed to resurrect that style and make them emphatically British. In her 11 year reign as Prime Minister it is clear she her style has remained memorable and to go by the selling of her suits extremely worthy.
