With the FIFA Balon d’Or ( the most prestigious award in the world of soccer) just around the corner, the two big stars in the game fight out yet again to see who is the best. Ronaldo and Messi both have been dominating the world of soccer for the past 8 years where Messi has won it five times! and Ronaldo doesn’t fall short with three in his account. Though many say Ronaldo is most probably going to take away the one this year but Messi too have a fair share in why he stand all the chance to grab the award yet again be the first player in history to win six Balon D’or. So, let’s compare and see who has a better chance to win this year.
First, let’s see Ronaldo’s and Messi’s performance in the La Liga last season:
As you can see Ronaldo has more goals than Messi. In fact, this is the third running season where Ronaldo finished ahead of his rival in the scoring charts . However, it is quite hard to say who had a better season because though Ronaldo has got more goals but it was Messi’s team that won the league .
Now let’s see how they both did in the Champions last season:
It is very clear that Ronaldo had a way better season in Champions League compared to Messi. In fact, he had a season better than anyone ever did. He became the first player in the history of the competition to score 16 goals in a league which helped his team to win the 11th Champions League. All fairness to Messi though as he had to leave the competition early as he was suffering from an injury.
Now let’s compare their individual performance for their country:
Again it is pretty obvious that Ronaldo had a better run for his country compared to Messi. Ronaldo even a won the European Championship with his national team Portugal which is his first trophy for his country and which Messi still had not been able to achieve. The Argentine did come close to winning the Copa America title but he missed the penalty which cost his team the trophy and what made it worse is that he resigned from international football which invited a lot of criticism.
Now let’s who has won more titles last season:
So, Messi finishes the season with four trophies (Spanish League title, Copa Del Rey, UEFA Super Cup, FIFA Club World Cup) in hand for his club and zero for his country, Ronaldo just has one each ( Champions League and European Championship). However, the number of trophies won doesn’t means Messi is going to win. After all, Ronaldo did win more club titles than Messi in 2012 and still came up empty.
Now to sum up let’s see an overall chart of their individual performance for the whole season:
Based on the chart again it is quite hard to judge who is better are they both compliment each other’s plus and minus. Ronaldo’s biggest plus is his strength, speed, and power. Being 6ft tall with an impeccable physique, Ronaldo is the perfect example of how a modern day footballer should like physically. This has strength has given his so much power in attack especially in heading and freekicks. Also given speed that no one can match, not even Ferrari car. His fitness reflects his discipline and attitude towards the game. Despite that, Ronaldo biggest weakness is he tries too much. He has often been criticized as one man show. He is guilty of trying to do too much on his own when using a team mate might have been a better option. He has also evidently showed frustration when a teammate had scored instead of him.
Unlike Ronaldo Messi is more of a team player. Messi has a remarkable reputation as a team player and is very rarely accused of holding onto the ball longer than he should have done. His assist numbers and through ball stats continue to surpass most of his own team players. Though, Messi lack of physical prowess to the likes of Ronaldo but he makes it up with skill, technique, and vision which makes him capable of holding his own against his larger opponents and pack some serious power behind his shots. Yet again, proving that size is deceptive.
So, there you have it. An in deep look in Ronaldo and Messi’s individual, club and country performance last season. Now, back to the question; who is better, is indeed a very tough question to answer as both Ronaldo and Messi are so different and unique from each other not just in they style of football they play but also as an individual. Ronaldo is like Ferrari and Messi are like Porsche you just can’t compare both and judge as they are both good but just completely different.
If you ask me, I would say instead of comparing who is better let’s just admit the fact that they’re are both good or let’s say the best in the modern day football and they still have years to continue their legacy. So, just let’s appreciate!
