Tiago Manuel Dias Correia, better known as Bebe, will go down in history as one of the worst signings ever made by Manchester United.
United boss Sir Alex Ferguson spent €9 million on the Portuguese forward, and admitted he was the first and only player he’s ever signed without having ever seen him play. The signing of Bebe was a controversial one to say the least. A questionable upbringing and peculiar third party agent fees only added to the confusion surrounding the deal.
Aside from a couple of brief cameos for the first team, Bebe spent the majority of his first year at Old Trafford in the reserves and has been shipped out on loan to clubs in Turkey and Portugal ever since.
Speaking in an interview with maisfutebol.iol.pt, Bebe spoke of his confusing time in Manchester and problems in his relationship with the United manager.
“I never took Manchester United seriously and never understood a word about what Alex Ferguson was saying.
“I went into the room and saw that he was looking for me, very concentrated. He told me to cut my hair, it will look better. So I cut it the same day. In the next training session, he didn’t recognise me. I went past him many times and he didn’t know me.
“He didn’t speak much but I didn’t understand much. He has a difficult accent, so I understood nothing. He called me “Baby”, after I told him it wasn’t like that.”
Bebe is currently on loan at Portuguese side Rio Ave, and is still contracted to Manchester United. His performances in a United shirt won’t have done him any favours, and his recent comments will surely all but end his chances of a return to Old Trafford.
