They say once you start college you’re bound to put on a few pounds within your first year, they call it the ‘Freshmen 15’. As students most of us don’t have the time or the money to spend on a gym membership. The city of Dublin YMCA have a number of classes that are ‘pay as you train’ for €6 a session. Based in Aungier street in Dublin’s city centre, the classes are ideal for students that do not have time to spend hours in the gym every week. One intense class a week might suit some students better, and for a much cheaper price than a gym membership. Below are a lis of the classes that run in the gym.
Break through Bootcamp (BTB)
Using a variety of workout methods, such as ‘the warm up is the workout,‘ various high intensity interval training modalities (Hurricanes, Tabeta, etc.), strength training with barbells, and bodyweight training,this class will push you beyond your limits and get you fitter than you’ve ever been! If your progress has stalled or hit a plateau, this class will get you moving again.
Ultimate Body Tone (UBT)
This class will focus on working on all your major muscle groups, along with High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT), ideal for anyone who wants to improve their overall fitness levels and likes a real challenge!
During the class, the instructor will have you performing a combination of barbell, dumbell and body weight exercises, followed by high intensity cardio drills. This class will stimulate a high metabolic response from your body, assisting with keeping off that body fat and toning it in all the right places.
Total Body Blast (TBB)
A class using high intensity resistance and cardio intervals, interspersed with short rest periods. Using intense anaerobic exercises, your whole body will be challenged. Total Body Blast is great for toning you head to toe, as well as improving cardio-vascular fitness.
This class uses two main styles of fitness in one! The instructor will alternate between muscle tone exercises and interval cardio exercises. The muscle tone exercises are done with free weights and body weight to add to resistance. The interval cardio exercises are designed to challenge and improve your fitness levels.
Barbell Blast will sculpt, tone, and strengthen your entire body, fast! Focusing on low weight loads and high repetition movements, you’ll burn fat, gain strength, and quickly produce lean body muscle conditioning.
Step aerobics is distinguished from other forms of aerobic exercise by its use of an elevated platform. Step aerobics is a great calorie burner. It provides endurance training, which helps maintain the health of the cardiovascular system.
Body Tone is a workout that challenges all your major muscle groups by using the best weight room exercises like squats, presses, lifts and curls. We use numerous body weight exercises including planks and press ups. Guaranteed to tone!
This amazing legs, hips, stomach shaping and calorie burning class blends techniques from dance with low-impact moves and is designed for the non-dancer. It’s like vertical Pilates! Our goal is to train your abs to act as a ‘corset,’ focusing on belly tightening and flattening, while strengthening your core. Unlike Pilates, this class is on your feet!

Known in YLifestyle as the killer class, if you want a tough workout this is the one. Using a range of body weight exercise and sculpting work you will feel the pain but you will get the results quickly. You can expect a tough high octane workout that will tone in all the right places!

A highly energetic class inspired by numerous disciplines of martial arts such as kickboxing, taekwondo & muay thai. combat is supported by pumping music and high energy instruction. Kick calories ass with aerobic strikes, uppercuts, kicks and jabs. This is a high impact, high intensity and highly enjoyable class that will burn calories super quick.

Spin is traditionally a simulated outdoor cycle indoors. The class on offer here incorporates more of an overall body workout not just focusing on sitting down and standing up on a bike, but press ups stability climbs and overall body workout is achieved without the use of any other equipment.
