Have you cried over the fact you didn’t win a Smedia?

I haven’t, but I have been very fortunate to be among the nominees, along with my fellow students Luisa Germer, Matea Stiglic and Thiago Reboucas. The 13th National Student Media Awards took place on 17th of April this year in the Ballsbridge Hotel. Now that we’re all over the fact that we didn’t win, we’d like to share our entry with the universe, so here’s a little bit about what we did.

The Zine was an arts and light entertainment show which focused on independent music and film. It was hosted by Thiago and I, with Matea and Luisa on sound and research. Matea and Luisa also put together segments on affordable fashion  for the show, adding to our diversity.

The show featured an interview with poet and prose writer Mary O’Donnell, who has just finished her fourth novel, Where They Lie .  Mary hosts her own radio show about poetry in translation called Crossing the Lines on RTÉ Radio One.

We interviewed Carlow’s Art Director Hugo Jellett, who also organises stages at the Longitude festival and the Salty Dog ship at Electric Picnic.

Young writer director Ricardo Deakin whose film The Red Bear won the Excellence in Directing Short Form Award at  2nd Annual International Film Festival of Cinematic Arts in Los Angeles was also interviewed.

The show featured live music from Brazilian artist Carlinhos Cruz,   Sara Weis and Alex Conroy of Kings and Cavaliers.

Above you can listen to Carlinhos recording his latest EP. Carlinhos regularly performs at the International Bar on Wicklow Street, Dublin 2.

ThiagoThiago also co-hosts the Amazing PTB with Peadar Breathnach and Barry Kane.
