Those in Blanchardstown blessed with the gift of gab ought to stock up on throat-soothing honey, as Dublin 15’s Phoenix FM prepare to host their 48-hour Radiothon from 26th to 28th March. The award-winning community radio station announced details of their two-day event and urged the people of Dublin 15 to get involved.
In a public statement online, the station encouraged the participation of individuals “who want to get hands-on experience in media by producing and presenting their own show.”
Those who wish to partake in the marathon broadcasting session must raise 50 euro per hour by seeking sponsorship, corporate or otherwise. The event will provide much needed funds to preserve the station’s function as the voice of the community.
92.5 Phoenix FM, who are based in the Blanchardstown Shopping Centre, have been operating in the Dublin 15 community for over 20 years.
The station currently broadcasts for 57 hours throughout the week, and, under strict broadcasting terms set out by the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland (BAI), employ a 60:40 ratio of talk and music.
Phoenix FM in December secured a two-year grant that will provide much needed funds to pay staff by the Pobal Community Services Programme. Pobal works as an intermediary for the government to support local communities towards achieving social inclusion and equality.
However, at an introductory meeting for potential volunteers last month, Phoenix FM’s Chairperson Mr Alan Connolly stated that it was obvious the station was not serving the needs of the entire community. Currently, the station is off-air between the hours of 1pm to 6:30pm Monday to Friday, while on Saturday’s they broadcast from 3pm to 10pm, and on Sunday’s 9.30am to 10pm. Mr Connolly noted that with such limited air time, it was impossible to offer a manifestly diverse range of perspectives.
He spoke of the need to fill the afternoon gap in Phoenix’s schedule, and says he hopes to remedy this with fundraising from the Radiothon event.
Phoenix FM’s 48-hour Radiothon will take place on Wednesday 26 March and end on Friday 28 March. If you are interested in supporting community radio in Dublin 15, please email firstname.lastname@example.org
