It can be surprising to see so many people in Ireland and United-Kingdom are drinking hard cider as others culture will drink beer or wine. We know that France is pro- wine, Germany is (or was) pro-beer but actually there is still a little competition with the pro-beer and the pro-cider, especially in Ireland and United-Kingdom. Then beer or cider? War is declared or rather the party…

Round 1: the alcohol
Cider is not for the wimp! and is usually grading to  8% volume of  alcohol. Also it can goes from to 18% volume depending of the fermentation of apple juice but cider still remain less alcoholic. Beer can contain to 15% volume of alcohol.

Round 2: the sugar
Cider and beer are containing a lot of sugar but did you know that beer is sugar-free? Some brewers however add sugar to balance sourness. On the other hand, cider is naturally gluten free but can be quite high in sugar as a result of the fermentation process.

Round 3: the calories
Awkward question! Are you ever heard of the cider “belly”? It is normal because it doesn’t exist, but the beer belly is causing a lot of damages to the men. Even if both beer and cider are calorie-rich drinks, cider is (just) a little bit less calorific. Actually, you can find on average 210 calories for a pint of hard cider and to 215 calories for the pint of beer (less than 5% alcohol).

Round 4: the benefits
Each drink may have beneficial effects on health, if you drink with moderation of course!
Scientists (at Brewing Research International) recently proved an important amount of antioxidants in the cider. Antioxidants can help you by protecting you from certain types of cancers, cardiovascular diseases, and neurodegenerative diseases. Also, Beer’s health benefits extend to the heart, according to a study of the Harvard School of Public Health and towards Italian researchers beer reduces the risk of heart disease by 31 percent!

Result: Beer can be the favourite alcoholic drinks, the cider makes some resistance and like we said, “An apple a day keeps the doctor away”!
