In the first of a series of interviews with people who have changed their careers, we talk to Patricia Lohan about her experience of changing her career path from marketing to healing and her journey to self-fulfilment and love in-between!
“Well I was always an entrepreneur! In school I used to pass a note around class saying I’d go to the shops for people and buy their lunches if they would pay me a small fee! So people would write down their lunch orders and I’d go to the shop for them and make some money! I set up a market stall in St Patrick’s market in Galway after that, I was always up to something!
Patricia went on to do a degree in Business and Marketing in University of Limerick. “Psychology was what I was really interested in, working with people but I listened to a lot of people who would say, ‘there’s no jobs in Arts’, so I didn’t listen to my gut and went with their advice”. While Patricia acknowledges she got a great foundation studying accountancy, it really wasn’t for her so she repeated a year and did marketing instead. “This was difficult at the time because it meant I didn’t graduate with all my friends, but it’s the best thing I did and it’s been the only thing I’ve really taken with me”.
Patricia comes from a family of entrepreneurs and she attributes her work ethic to what she learned from her parents. After college Patricia worked in various marketing roles including working for a company in Japan as part of an Invest Northern Ireland graduate programme. On her return to Ireland she decided to work with her family and she took over their pub and restaurant in Galway and at age 24 she was managing 30 staff.
While the business was a huge success, winning a number of prestigious hospitality awards, Patricia says she didn’t feel fulfilled. “My mum saw it in me. She had been to visit my sister in Australia and when she came back she said to me ‘I don’t think you’re happy’ and she was right”. Patricia describes this as being a significant moment for her. Shortly after this she decided to take some time out and go on a world tour.
This journey was to be the beginning of a total change of life and way of living for Patricia. “I went to India and trained in Yoga and Reiki. I don’t believe there are any accidents and through a series of bizarre coincidence I was introduced to singing bowls and became a sound healer, none of it was in my plan!”
On her return to Ireland Patricia explains she still didn’t really know how she was going to earn her living, however, things happened, connections developed and she began healing through sound and energy, also finding her way to Feng Shui. Patricia says, “I didn’t go looking for any of this! It all just came!”
Patricia believes her journey to her personal fulfilment in terms of her career has been intrinsically linked with her path to finding true love and after meeting her fiancé, she has recently developed The Soul-Mate Attraction Formula.
“I believe when you are young you know what you are meant to do. I didn’t listen to my young self and I took the long way around. But nothing is wasted, I ended up working with people, like I always wanted to, just in a way I could never have expected!”
