London Fashion Week is the closest we (Irish) come to exposure of the fashion world’s elite. Sure, you can dip down to Brown Thomas to drool over a piece or two, but nothing will measure up to the atmosphere that surrounds such an event. Twice a year, a portion of our fashionable population takes the trip to England’s capitol to immerse themselves in the fabulousness that designers of that calibre radiate.
But, to be fair, our little Emerald Isle does have something to offer when it comes to the style stakes. This year, for example, Irish designers like Orla Kiely and Paul Costelloe and emerging stars Una Burke and Liam Fahy will feature along with the best of Britain.
But perhaps the most anticipated display of Irish talent will come from Dublin-born Simone Rocha. The emerging talent is quickly solidifying her place within the fashion industry – and not just because of her designer Dad. John Rocha has long established his brand, but it’s safe to say his daughter has taken over as this generation’s stylish Irish.
Simone, 27, graduated with a BA in Fashion from The National College of Art and Design in 2008, and continued her study by gaining her Fashion MA from the Central Saint Martin’s College in London. Rocha received the Emerging Womenswear Designer award at the British Fashion Awards 2013 and already has a capsule collection for Topshop and recent announcement of a collaboration with J Brand under her belt.
Simone’s modern take on feminine silhouettes with romantic pastels and creative textures, make her one-to-watch on the world’s fashion stage. She will debut her A/W ’14 show on Tuesday (the 18th) that will no doubt be the talk of the fashionable town and set trends for the year to come.
