We all know fast food isn’t the healthiest of options, but sometimes after a night out or when you’re feeling lazy it’s just the easiest option. However these 8 sickening facts about our favourite fast food may make you think twice.

Chicken Nuggets

Many mincemeat products have a reputation of being made from parts of the cow you would never eat, but chicken nuggets take the top spot for disgusting meat products.  Made from a liquefied meat product put through a process called mechanical separation to smooth out the bone remnants they are then moulded into the familiar shapes we know.  An efficient way of using the whole chicken (and yes we really mean the WHOLE chicken) and some other unidentified ingredients, the reality of chicken nuggets is actually pretty disgusting.

Processed cheese

Processed cheese is in fact more accurately described as a cheese like substance.  These products also contain chemicals and flavourings that combine to account for the vast proportion of the total product.  This “cheese” often contains just the minimum amount of real cheese to allow the companies to call it cheese. In addition did you know that rennet which is a crucial part of making cheese is obtained by slicing up a calf’s stomach and soaking it in whey and wine and then filtering it?

Strawberry milkshakes

Strawberries are lovely but one of the more expensive fruits, evidently the fast food companies agrees with many companies using up to 50 chemicals to imitate their taste for products like milkshakes.  These in include ethyl acetate, phenythyl alcohol and solvent.

A can of Coke would make you sick, literally but for one ingredient

Each can of coke contains 10 teaspoons of sugar, not only is this 100% of your RDA leading to such problems like obesity and diabetes, this extreme sweetness would also normally lead you to immediately vomit.  However that wouldn’t make for a very pleasant product or indeed profits.  Therefore Coca Cola adds phosphoric acid – this cuts the sweetness to more manageable levels for our body.

Jelly Beans

Turns out Jelly Beans get their shine from shellac. This is a finishing product that is used to improve the shine of wood, furniture and well jelly beans!  That would be strange enough but just to take it one step further, shellac is sourced from the secretions of an insect in Thailand called the Kerrria Iacca.

Burger buns

Feathers and hair are not something you would expect to find in your food.  However duck feathers, their by-products and even human hair can be used as a source of L-cysteine which is an ingredient used to make processed dough more pliable.

Deep fried foods

Not only do deep fried foods contain dangerously high levels of fat they also contain something a little unexpected.  Silly Putty, yes really!  Also known as the chemical Dimethylplyiloxane, this ingredient is used to keep the frying oil used for our deep fried foods from foaming, and also to make silly putty.

Beetle Juice…

Not just a movie, this is an actual ingredient found in many fast food products however it is more commonly referred to as Carminic acid. This ingredient is sourced from the crushed bodies of beetles. This is used in sausage and other meat products, pie fillings, bakery product and sauces.

So do any of these facts make you think twice and do you have any other fast food facts to add to the list?
